What to do after an interview

(*The top 1% of candidates all do this ONE thing within 24 hours of their interview and it works*)

Here’s how to stand out after an interview:

If you’ve just finished an interview and you’re sitting around waiting to hear back, you’re already doing it wrong. The best candidates follow-up with their interviewer within 24 hours of their interview. And I don’t say that lightly, I’ve landed over 25 interviews, and I sent a follow-up email every single time.

A great follow-up can move you from “just another applicant” to “someone they remember.”
Here’s what to include in yours:

3 things your follow-up email must have:
1️⃣ Mention something specific from your conversation, it shows you were engaged and genuinely interested.
2️⃣ Thank the interviewer for their time and clearly reference the role or company.
3️⃣ Reaffirm your interest in the position in 1–2 lines, and why you’re a strong fit.

Want to see the exact email that helped me stand out?

"Hi X,

Thank you so much for the opportunity to interview for X earlier today. I really enjoyed speaking with you and learning more about the exciting work being done at the firm.

Our conversation made me even more excited about the possibility of contributing to your team, especially after hearing about the recent project you mentioned involving a rare disease biotech company navigating its Series B raise. The opportunity to work on engagements like that, alongside X’s wide client base and diverse therapeutic focus, really aligns with what I’m hoping to do next. The exposure to strategic decision-making across the product lifecycle is exactly what I’m looking for at this stage of my career.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything else from my side. I’m looking forward to hearing back from you!

Warm regards,
X"

Here are 3 things you should do in your interview:

  • When an interviewer asks, “how are you?” at the start of an interview, don’t just reply saying “I’m good, how are you?”
First impressions matter. This is your chance to show personality, confidence and try to set the tone. Try something like:
🗣️ “I’m doing great, really excited to be speaking with you today! Bonus tip: Mention something fun you did over the weekend or ask how their week is going. It creates a natural small talk moment and sets a friendly tone for the rest of the conversation.”

  • Log on at least 5-10 minutes prior to the interview in case of any technical difficulties.
Whether virtual or in-person, log in or arrive at least 10–15 minutes early.
Have your resume ready, review the company, bring a notebook, and prep thoughtful questions.
It shows you're proactive and genuinely interested.

  • Dress professionally.
First impressions stick. Research the company’s dress code ahead of time (e.g. scroll through their socials). When in doubt: business casual. Clean, well-fitted clothes always work. Keep it polished — especially on Day 1.
