Applying to 100+ jobs and still no interviews?

*Only read this if you're serious about landing your dream job

Do you feel like your job applications are going into a black hole?

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. I used to send out tens of applications every week, tweaking a few words here and there, hitting "submit application," and hoping for the best. Most of the time? Hearing nothing back.

It wasn’t until I changed my strategy that things actually started to work in my favor.

Here’s what worked for me:

I stopped applying everywhere.
Instead, I made a list of 20+ companies I genuinely admired, companies I could actually see myself working at.

I started talking to people.
Not cold pitching. Just simply connecting. I reached out on LinkedIn, joined events, asked questions, and most importantly, listened. These conversations taught me way more than any job description ever could.

I set up casual coffee chats.
Nothing formal. Just 15-20 minute Zoom calls/phone calls to hear about someone’s experience. I didn’t ask for anything upfront, I just wanted to learn more about their role, day-to-day responsibilities and experience working at their respective company.

I asked for referrals but only after building real connections.
When it made sense, I asked if they’d be open to referring me. Not everyone said yes, and that’s okay. But many did and those referrals opened doors for me and made me land interviews.

I personalized every single application.
I stopped using the same resume and cover letter for every job. Instead, I tailored them for the role, showing exactly how I could add value.

It took more time, yes. But it worked. I started getting interviews, callbacks, and eventually, offers. The difference was night and day.

So if you’re stuck in the spray-and-pray cycle, maybe it’s time to try something different. Be intentional. Focus on people, not just postings.

You don’t need to apply to 100 jobs. You need to apply to the right ones with the right strategy.

Want to leave a lasting impression in your next interview?

One of the most underrated ways to stand out as a candidate is by asking smart, thoughtful questions at the end of your interview. It shows you’re not just prepared but you’re genuinely interested in the role, the team, and the company’s future.

Here are some of the interview questions that have impressed recruiters time and time again:

What does excellence look like in this role? What does it take to be successful in the first year?

How would you describe the company culture, and how does it contribute to the success of the team?

How does the company support professional growth and development, especially in tech?

Can you tell me more about the training or coaching programs available for new hires?

Is there anything on my resume or from this conversation that you'd like me to clarify or expand on?

Want to go one step further? Try these follow-up questions to show you're already thinking like someone on the inside:

Have there been any major changes in the company recently? Where do you see the team or industry headed in the next few years?

What are some of the most memorable or impactful projects you've worked on lately?

What does an ideal candidate look like beyond what’s listed on the job description?

Bonus: I recently interviewed at a healthtech startup and asked this question which impressed the recruiter: “From what I understand, patients currently need to manually reach out when they require follow-up supplies, replacements, and then Company X manages the communication with providers and insurers. Has the team considered using AI, like predictive models based on patient condition, equipment type, or care protocols to proactively anticipate those needs and automate reminders or even initiate workflows? I’m curious how Company X is thinking about that from both a patient experience and operational efficiency standpoint.” TL;DR: Thoughtful, insight-driven questions make you stand out as someone who’s already thinking like an insider.

These questions don’t just help you stand out, they help you decide if the company is the right fit for you too.
